FASHION // Fashion Designers in Movies
Thursday, December 01, 2011
When I was enrolled at italian university, one of the classes I loved most was about cinema.
I really love movies, when I want to take a break, I go to cinema.
So, when I had to choose my dissertation's subjects I chose fashion (of course) and cinema.
In other words, my thesis was about the relationship between fashion designers and movies, from a semiotic and an economic points of view.
Despite of the high number of amazing costume designers, my dissertation was only about fashion designers' works. It was a choice, mine.
And it was composed by 271 pages. Practically a book.
Anyway, since that moment, people started to ask me which are the films with the best costumes.
So, here is a list of wonderful movies with incredible costumes, made by well-known fashion designers and couturiers.
My most-loved and the cult movies:
1) THE BEGINNING OF THIS RELATIONSHIP: "Sabrina" by Billy Wilder. 1954.
Givenchy's Evening Gown:
The trailer:
2) THE TOURNING POINT FOR MENSWEAR IN MOVIES: "American Gigolo" by Paul Schrader. 1980.
Armani's deconstructed blazer:
3)WHEN ELEGANCE, SADNESS AND BEAUTY MEET THE FASHION GURU: "A Single Man" by Tom Ford. 2009.
Tom Ford's menswear:
The trailer:
4) THE FRENCH AFFAIR: "Belle de Jour" by Luis Bunuel. 1967.
Yves Saint Laurent's perfection:
5) THE FASHION MOVIE: "The Devil Wears Prada" by David Frankel. 2006.
The Trailer:
There are just a few, for other suggestions please ask me, I'll be glade to tell you more!
